The admissions committee supervises a holistic review process that incorporates a variety of factors, including many kinds of academic records. Because secondary school courses, grading practices, and standards vary, you must show additional evidence of preparation through standardized national and international examination results. However, we seek to enroll a diverse and talented class each year, and our review procedures allow for you to demonstrate readiness through a wide variety of tests (see below for list).

Standardized test results must be sent directly from the testing agency to be considered official. Only your highest SAT or ACT sub-scores will be considered in our final decision, even if they are from different test dates. Beginning in 2016, Rochester will begin to accept the current (2015) and new (2016) SAT exam versions as equivalent. We will measure and publish the success of the new SAT in predicting success at Rochester starting in 2018. Rochester will not require you to take the SAT essay when it becomes optional, but will urge those applicants who do take the essay to submit those results.

A wide variety of test results can fulfill Rochester’s testing requirement, including SAT Reasoning exams, the ACT, two or more results from SAT Subject exams, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, GCE, SE, AS- and A-level exams (in UK and Commonwealth countries), Gao Kao (China), and results from many other national secondary exams.

TOEFL or IELTS are required for international student form whom English is not their first language. For these students the requirement can be waived if the student has been in a primarily English - language instruction since the beginning of ninth grade.

Transfer applicants are encouraged to submit their standardized exam results. In fact, if you have not completed your first year of college, you must submit standardized exam results. But if you have completed more than a year of college-level courses, you may prefer that only your college work be considered.

TOEFL or IELTS are required for international student form whom English is not their first language. For these students the requirement can be waived if the student has been in a primarily English - language college instruction for one year or more.
